Mrs. Kuhn has started an after school game club to give students at Sullivan Middle School an opportunity to expand social interactions while having fun learning to play new games. Mrs. Kuhn was able to buy a number of brand new games thanks to a grant through DonorsChoose.org #OneTribe

Sullivan Middle School changed things up a bit today to focus on building a better understanding of empathy and the importance of being kind. A big thank you goes out to our friends at the Little Theater on the Square for hosting us for the movie Wonder this morning. After lunch, we were fortunate to hear a very positive and inspiring message from our guest, Mr. Dan Lynch, principal of Crestwood School in Paris, IL. Students were then able to attend an afternoon of workshop-style sessions on topics ranging from bullying to self esteem. The students were great from start to finish. Sullivan Middle School is ready to #BeTheChange! #OneTribe

5th grade science students got to experience the Science Lab at the Middle School on Monday. They checked the solubility of different kinds of matter and made observations based on which substances dissolved in water. For the rest of the week, they are making observations to see what happens to those substances after they dissolve! Is it still there? They will be checking their cups this week as the water evaporates to see if there is any trace of their matter. Being able to utilize the lab is a great experience for our younger students! #onetribe

6th grade math students have been using a variety of hands-on activities during math lab to practice their new skills.

5th Grade STEM enjoyed Ag in the Classroom today! Mrs. Lehman introduced and made corn plastic with students. STEM has recently been working on a recycling project, mainly focusing on plastics. Corn plastic was an interesting alternative to learn about.

Our STEM education classes were lucky enough to receive a $5,000 grant from @ADMCares this school year. The money was spent to provide many resources to enrich the STEM curriculum at SMS. Students in STEM classes will spend their time working collaboratively to solve problems that involve Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Thanks to ADMCares, we can provide students with an opportunity to think critically, be creative, and collaborate which are all valuable skills as they begin to think about their future careers! #onetribe #ADMCares

6th graders were able to create during their STEM lab class. The first challenge was creating a tower two feet high only using index cards and twelve inches of tape. After that, they were able to freely create! We are so appreciative of SCEF and ADM who both provided us with generous grants to get our STEM program started! We can’t wait to see our students collaborate, create, and think critically this year! #onetribe

6th Grade Science working on team work!

Thanks in large part to the generosity of the Sullivan Community Education Foundation and the hard work and dedication of the Sullivan CUSD 300 Maintenance Staff, Sullivan Middle School Teachers and Students were introduced this week to The Hub: Where Innovation Meets Collaboration. We are excited to put this newly redesigned space to good use.

7th grade STEM making use of the tables in the HUB to collaborate together about issues that plastics are causing around the globe.

The faculty and staff at SMS is very excited for students to return to our building tomorrow. We hope they had a great summer and are ready for all of the exciting things we have in store for them this year. Just a few reminders:
-First period begins at 8:15, so students need to be in the building with enough time to get to their lockers and be in class by 8:15. A student entering after 8:15 will be considered tardy to school (see Student Handbook).
-We will have a full day of student attendance on the first day of school, so we will dismiss at 3:15 as usual.
-Please adhere to our new traffic flow policy and refrain from pulling through our parking lot to pick-up or drop-off between 7:45-8:15 and 3:00-3:30.
-Student planners are available for purchase at a price of $6.50. In addition to being a great resource for students to stay organized (includes school calendar and other helpful organization tools), the planners include a coupon for free fries at McDonalds, $5 off an oil change at Neal Tire, and free student or adult admission to one home sporting event, so the value of the coupons exceeds the cost of the planner. Once again, we would love to see every student with one of these in their hands. Students can purchase before school in room 106 or parents can purchase in the school office.
