Mason Point

On December 20th, students and staff from Sullivan Middle School once again loaded up buses to go out into the community as part of an ongoing focus on service. Students spent the morning of their last day before Christmas break visiting residents at nine area nursing homes and assisted living facilities: five here in Sullivan and four in Mattoon.

In addition to spending time chatting with the residents about their lives and plans for the holidays, students worked to complete a holiday craft that the residents could keep as a momento of their visit. In this case, it was a construction paper wreath they could use as decoration in their rooms. Students also joined together at many of the locations to sing some Christmas Carols before loading the buses to return to SMS.

This is the second service day of the year with a third planned for the spring. During the fall and spring service days, students are able to choose between a few options for their service projects, including park clean-up and working with the Army Corps of Engineers, but visiting our area nursing homes and assisted living facilities is always a top choice for the majority of students at Sullivan Middle School.
