Because all SES students have paper packets to return and all SMS/SHS students will be handed PE and Locker belongings, every student should have someone attend. Please be sure that students and teacher names are written on assignments. All remaining textbooks, library books, and school-issued athletic uniform items should be turned in. Students in 3rd through 11th grade may keep their iPads over the summer, but you may turn them in if you are moving or simply don’t want to keep track of it over the summer. 2019 SHS Yearbooks and 2020 SMS/SES Yearbooks and Knights Action Park tickets may be picked up. In honor of the graduating seniors and first responders, Sullivan High School will turn on the football field lights from 8:00-8:20 PM this Friday April 24th for anyone that wants to drive by. The back parking lot will be closed.
Due to the IHSA cancelling the spring sports state series yesterday, spring sports athletes (as well as any student that has a school issued uniform from a previous sports season this year at the 5th/6th grade, middle school, and high school levels) needs to turn their uniforms in at the next packet pick up/drop off on Tuesday April 28th from 1:00 to 6:00 PM in the SHS back parking lot. Please be sure to have your uniform items in a bag and a piece of paper with your name on it inside the bag to make the drop off and collection process efficient.
A message from Superintendent of Sullivan Schools, Ted Walk: Governor Pritzker has announced that all public schools in Illinois will be closed for the remainder of the academic year. It is truly heartbreaking that we will not be able to interact with our students as we normally would again this year. The Sullivan School District remains committed to serving our students and community throughout these unprecedented times. While additional information may cause modifications to our plan moving forward, we did want to update our students, parents, and community with the following tentative information. On Tuesday, April 28th, there will be another learning packet drop-off and pick-up from 1pm until 6pm. This will be the final learning packet pick-up. The final packets will be due on Friday, May 15th. Tentative final grades will be posted by Wednesday, May 20th. For our seniors only, the final learning packet will be due on Friday, May 8th. This will allow for materials to be quarantined for the appropriate time before being graded before graduation. Details are being finalized for a graduation event, likely a car parade, that will occur on Sunday, May 17th. In addition, the Sullivan School District is committed to providing a traditional, formal graduation ceremony when we are permitted to do so. Tentative graduation dates are Sunday, June 28th or Sunday, July 26th. We are also planning a virtual Awards Night on Wednesday, May 6th, and a virtual Decision Day Ceremony on Friday, May 15th. We are tentatively rescheduling Prom for Saturday, June 13th, with a contingency date of Saturday, July 18th. We are also rescheduling the SMS 7th/8th Grade Spring Dance on Friday, June 12th, with a contingency date of Friday, July 17th. Our Meal Program will continue through the month of May (though the dates may change slightly around Memorial Day weekend). We are also looking at options that continue into the summer, though these would be dependent on a number of factors that have yet to be determined. Although a final decision will be made by the IHSA next week, it appears likely that all Spring athletic activities will be cancelled. Because we will have additional steps on our end to treat uniforms, we ask that these uniforms, or any uniforms from previous seasons, be returned on the April 28th learning packet pick-up and drop-off date. There are a number of items that are very much on the minds of our community and our school personnel that still do not have answers. Summer school or additional summer support will be determined as more information becomes available. We are also looking at best practice for locker cleanout. A date for Kindergarten Orientation is yet to be set. Additionally, decisions regarding summer camps and open gyms are still to be determined. This is an ending to a school year unlike any that we could have imagined. Though we have planned for the end of the school year, there is still so much learning that is yet to take place. I continue to encourage all students to try their best. I continue to urge all parents to help to the extent you are able, but I want you to understand that we will have protocols in place over the summer or in the fall to help make certain your students continue to see the academic success that we expect from students at Sullivan Schools. Please be safe and continue to support our wonderful community in trying times such as these.
The Sullivan School District understands the financial challenges that families may be enduring due to possible loss of jobs or reduction of hours. Families may apply for free or reduced price meals at any time during the school year. Although meals are currently being provided to all children free of charge, the Illinois Department of Human Services will be implementing the Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) which will provide extra funding to families who have children who qualify for free or reduced-priced meals. If your circumstances have recently changed, please don't hesitate to apply for the free or reduced price meal program. You may apply through Skyward, selecting Food Service and then choosing the Application tab at the top of the page. The deadline for application for the P-EBT funding is tomorrow, Friday April 17. If you have questions about the application or need assistance in completing a paper application, please contact Becky Batman tomorrow between 1-3pm at (217)728-8341, and she can assist you through the process. Thanks for your continued support of Sullivan Schools!

SMS/SHS students and parents will have access to lockers at this time as well. SES students can pick up medication from 10am-6pm on Tuesday in the SES office, and SMS/SHS students can pick up medication during this time in the SMS office. After this time, no students or parents will have access to the building for the duration of the closure. Statement Regarding Sullivan Show Choir Competition on Saturday, January 25, 2020. As of the afternoon of Friday, January 24th, weather sources are forecasting overnight snow ranging from 2-6 inches for the area surrounding Crete-Monee with forecasted temperatures in the low 30’s during the timeframe that our Show Choir buses will be making their way to the competition venue. While we are incredibly proud of the tradition of excellence that exists in our Show Choir program and are very excited for them to compete on Saturday, we believe that a big part of “Thinking of Students First” is keeping their safety first and foremost in our decision making. We will continue to monitor weather forecasts throughout the evening, and the plan moving forward is to send our show choirs to Crete-Monee as planned; however, we will be sending an administrator along with the buses to continuously monitor road conditions to determine if the buses may proceed or should turn around and come home. If the decision is made that it is no longer safe to proceed, the buses will turn around as soon as it is safe to do so and return immediately to Sullivan High School. Notification of a decision to turn around would be communicated through the district’s social media platforms and through the Singers Booster Club.

In light of Friday’s tragedy, we will be making a slight change to the schedule for Homecoming week theme days. On Monday, instead of Dynamic Duo/Twin Day as our dress-up day, we are going to dress in blue in honor of Tyson, as that was his favorite color. We would like to invite the entire Sullivan community to participate as well. Additionally this week, the Sullivan PTO will be collecting for a memorial fund that will be donated to the family in remembrance of their loved one. This tragedy has affected us all, regardless of whether or not we knew Tyson. In times like these, we need to rely on each other and grow as a school family.
A Message from Sullivan School Superintendent Ted Walk to Parents: As you know, our Sullivan school family suffered a horrible tragedy yesterday. The loss of a student is all of our biggest fears and the reality of this tragedy is setting in. As parents, the loss of another student or your child’s peer is not something you are prepared for. We would like to offer a time for parents to come together to offer support to each other, as well as share some tips on how to speak to your students about this tragedy. This will be an informal meeting in the Sullivan Elementary School Gym at 4:30 pm on Sunday, September 29. Attendance is voluntary. The area crisis team, comprised of local school psychologists, school social workers, and school counselors has been assembled and will be in the district all day on Monday. They will provide counseling and support services to our students and any staff members that are in need. We will continue to assess the need for additional emotional support moving forward. Children grieve in a multitude of ways and in varied amounts of time. As we continue through this challenging process, please remember to contact the school if you notice that your child is having difficulty. We will work together, as a team, to provide the needed support and care for your child. If you have any specific questions, please contact Jessica Reeder, Sullivan School Psychologist and Special Education Coordinator, at firstname.lastname@example.org. Please continue to keep this family and our Sullivan School community in your thoughts and prayers.

Last month, Nichole Hendry (4th Grade teacher), received notification that she would receive the Lumpkin Family Foundation grant for $7294 to go towards the school’s Garden Project. Mrs. Hendry organized the Garden Project with the help of school staff and community members last spring. She wrote the grant to help cover the costs of the project, such as outdoor classroom materials, tools, a green house, and curriculum. Mrs. Hendry has volunteered many hours throughout the school year and the summer to get this project off the ground. It has provided wonderful learning experiences for the students and an opportunity for the school to collaborate with the community. Last year we were able to get the project started through some very generous local donors, while the money received from this grant will help the school focus more on developing collaborative relationships with our area businesses and creating a self-sustaining program with the hope of potentially expanding it. The Lumpkin Family Grant is a private, family foundation from Mattoon, Illinois. Their mission is to get people to work together for the betterment of our communities. More information is available about the Lumpkin Family Foundation at www.lumpkinfoundation.org.

Congratulations to Sullivan Elementary School music teacher Courtney Leach for being elected as the ILMEA District 5 president! With 3500 members, the ILMEA (Illinois Music Education Association) is the largest Fine Arts education organization in Illinois and is one of the largest in the nation. Its purpose is to promote music within the schools, to give students great and unique musical experiences, and to provide professional development opportunities for music teachers. In her first year at Sullivan Elementary, Mrs. Leach has created a buzz about music among the students and staff alike. With her upbeat personality, love of teaching, and passion for music, she has students excitedly participating in classes and developing their own passion for music. She has already put together a great Veterans Day program, and we are looking forward to seeing what she has for us this Christmas!
Every month, Sullivan Elementary School recognizes students who go above and beyond expectations by awarding them "Gold Slips." Here are the Gold Slip winners from the month of November (from left to right): Kolton Kirby saw a pre-K student struggling to turn the water on at the restroom. Instead of doing it for him, Kolton taught him how to do it himself for the next time, then praised the student. He didn't know anyone was watching; what a kind and caring student! Porter Addison noticed a friend was sad. He asked if he could sit by that friend to cheer him up. What a sweet friend Porter is! Luke Schultz saw a classmate crying because she dropped her lunch on the floor. He helped her pick it up to make her feel better! Madyx Schwass is very helpful to others at the end of the school day. We all work to clean up our room to make vacuuming easier for Mr. Lappin, but Madyx does more than his fair share! He stacks most of the chairs in the room, picks up paper and trash, and helps classmates get organized. In addition, Madyx brings in the lunch cart from the hall and puts all of the chairs on the table in the hall so Mr. Lappin's job is easier! Cali Szabo is always so pleasant and polite. She was an easy choice to be a buddy and helper for our new student! Cali has helped unpack supplies, set up a binder, label a journal, create a card of logins and passwords, explain classroom, lunchroom, and school procedures, and more! She has befriended our new classmate and made her feel welcome. They have had lunch and played together. Cali is a terrific, cheerful leader! Torreon Phillips stands quietly in the lunch line every single day while students around him are talking when they are not supposed to.

This link will take you to the video of middle school principal Mr. Ogle receiving the pie in the face following the friendly competition between SES and SMS to raise food and money for Eastern Illinois Foodbank's Day of Giving, of which SES won. Since the drive was for food, we decided that we should not waste food by smashing it in someone's face, so we replaced it with slime and shaving cream (unbeknownst to Mr. Ogle). He was a great sport! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNsyGJRax7Q&feature=youtu.be
This week during library, Mrs. Fleming read the story Claymates, a Monarch Award nominated book, written by Dev Petty and illustrated by Lauren Eldridge. Claymates is the hilarious tale of a clay owl and a clay wolf that have great fun transforming themselves into various creatures. But what happens when their artist-creator comes back...yikes! Students in all grades enjoyed being the artist and sculpted their own claymate with Play-Doh and a pair of googly eyes.
As a result of tremendous community cooperation and great coordinating by Mrs. Graham, Sullivan Elementary School was able to raise $1010.37 and 904 total grocery items for the Eastern Illinois Foodbank's Day of Giving! Shout out to Gary, Betty Jo, Brad Emel for helping transport the food to New Life Tabernacle Food Pantry. Thank you so much to all the local businesses and organizations that participated!

Help an SES student discover the love of reading today with a sponsorship! Each month, SES teachers send home Scholastic Book Club fliers for our students to share with their families and purchase books if they so choose. Each Scholastic flier ALWAYS has at least 1 book for just $1 that teachers can easily order for EVERY student. That is 8 BOOKS for $8 per child for 8 months!!! Sullivan Elementary has already had a large number of teachers who have their students sponsored, we are now looking at getting EVERY SES student sponsored. If you would like to help put 1 book in EVERY child's hand, a SMILE on their face, and a LOVE FOR READING in their heart EVERY remaining month during this school year, KEEP ON READING! If you are interested in “sponsoring” a child in the school and bringing them JOY EACH AND EVERY MONTH, please write a check for $8 (or however much you would be willing to donate), make it out to "Sullivan Elementary School", and mail (or bring) it to Sullivan Elementary School ATTN: Daniel Allen 910 North Graham Street Sullivan, IL 61951. Please help us turn this goal into a reality and put the MAGIC OF READING right at our future's fingertips! THANK YOU! *If you don't know about "Scholastic Book Clubs", watch this video and see how TOGETHER we can help children discover a lifelong love of reading!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GvdkQyJ9a0

This is Ted Walk, Superintendent of Sullivan Schools. A note was discovered Friday, March 23rd, indicating a possible bomb threat to Sullivan High School. The credibility of the threat could not be immediately determined, and Sullivan Schools dismissed students starting at 1:15. Students were relocated to the American Legion and Sullivan Civic Center for parent reunification. Law enforcement and school administration conducted a search of the buildings and grounds, and no evidence of a bomb was found. An individual was arrested in connection with these events. The administration and law enforcement believe there is no current threat to the safety of Sullivan Schools. The Sullivan School District would like to thank a number of people, including the Sullivan Police Department, Moultrie County Sheriff’s Department, and Sullivan Fire Department for quick response times, as well as the bus drivers who altered arrangements to ensure students' ability to return safely home. Teachers and staff filled various roles efficiently and effectively. The accommodation of the American Legion and Sullivan Civic Center were essential for an orderly reunification. Most of all we thank the parents, students, and community who were able to adapt to the adjustment quickly and with understanding. We will continue to review our emergency and pick-up procedures in order to make improvements. Counseling will be available to any student who desires when schools resume session on Tuesday, April 3rd, after Spring Break. The safety and well-being of our students is our top priority. Thank you for your continued support of Sullivan Schools.
This is Ted Walk, Superintendent of Sullivan Schools. We have just discovered a note indicating a possible bomb threat to Sullivan High School. It is not believed to be imminent, and may likely not be credible, but it is not a chance we will take. As a result, SHS and SMS students will be dismissed from school at 1:15 and SES students at 1:25. SHS and SMS students who are awaiting parent pickup can connect with parents at the American Legion. SES Parents picking students up will meet them at the Civic Center. Buses will run for all bus students.

This is just a reminder to be stressing the importance of internet safety with your children. If your child has social media accounts, we encourage you to have conversations with them about the nature of their interactions with others online. Make sure they know not to accept friend or follow requests from people they do not know and that they should never share inappropriate images regardless of their relationship with the other party. As much as possible, check on what they are posting and look through their contact list for anyone you don’t know. Our children are growing up with a level of connectivity that seemed impossible only a generation ago, and we all need to work together to ensure they learn to navigate it appropriately.
